School Resource Officer (SRO) is a program that is a collaborative effort by U.S. law enforcement officers, educators, students, parents, and the community to offer law related educational programs in the schools in an effort to reduce crime, drug abuse, violence, and provide a safe school environment. This model has been transferred to Sakhalin Island, Russia where there are now 21 School Resource Officers (School Inspectors) working with kids in classrooms. Most are female officers in their mid-20’s, with backgrounds in education and youth counseling, but with little or no prior experience in law enforcement. Take a look at this video of a recent training on Sakhalin by SRO Steve Beets on drug and alcohol prevention.
